Some school closings but mainly

Mondays subzero temperatures created a nuisance for homeowners, a few Lake County school districts, public works departments and businesses.

Lake Zurich Unit District 95 was forced to close all nine schools when 15 of its 62 school buses wouldnt start, and only a few bus drivers had arrived by 5:30 a.m. The buses were working at 10 p.m. Sunday.

You just cant control that, said Superintendent Brian Knutson. We would have had to consolidate several bus routes, and that would have caused little kids to be standing outside up to 20 minutes longer than they normally do. If we had all of our drivers and buses going, it might have been a different story.

Knutson said the missed school day would count toward five allowed emergency days. The districts bus contractor, Midwest Transit, rechecked the batteries of all buses to make sure they start today.

Striving to Get Students to Drop Back In

Each night, while his peers prepared for the next school day, Michael Barksdale picked out DVDs to watch from the comfort of his living room.

He should have been in 11th grade at Ballou Senior High School in Southeast Washington, but he was so far behind in such core subjects as reading and math that school officials wanted to bump him back two whole grades. So he stayed home and slept late.

Woman Talks About Poor Care at Nursing Home

As a Jackson County nursing home is being shut down by the state, family members of residents are speaking out. The daughter of a former Cedar Knoll care center patient tells 6 News she's relieved the facility will be forced to close its doors. She feels the staff at Cedar Knoll did not provide adequate care for her mother. In fact, repeat inspections at the Grass Lake nursing home turned up more than three times the state average for safety violations.

Cindy Walters, mother lived at Cedar Knoll: "I feel like we were cheated out of the rest of my mom's life. We went through the suffering with her the whole way, and that stroke was the beginning of what was to come next, and it wasn't fun."

Cedar Knoll's management declined to comment. The center will be closed by the end of the month.

Christmas at our house lasts all year

I never thought I'd have anything in common with country music superstar Gretchen Wilson, but I'm living a line in her song "Redneck Woman."

The Christmas lights are still on at my house. Not on the front porch like at Gretchen's, but in the living room.

They're still on in the garland that lines the mantle of our fireplace, and shine brightly on the TREE that stands right beside it. Yes, the Christmas tree, all 9-1/2 feet of plastic and metal, still stands at our house.

Why is the Christmas tree still up? A better question is why did it go up in the first place?

The days of November and December flew by at our house like Santa's sled over a house full of juvenile delinquents.

It started when one of wife Claudia's daughters had her graduation from massage therapy school in North Carolina.
