An off-duty Lansing police officer involved in a fatal accident early Monday in Genesee County was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, Michigan State Police said. He then was released, pending an investigation. Officer Johnnie Torres, a Flushing resident, has not been charged with a crime. He has been placed on paid administrative leave while Genesee County prosecutors review the incident. A 42-year-old Mount Morris man died in the accident, which happened near Interstate 475 in Mount Morris Township. .

Miss Tashjian was a textbook example of how difficult it is to deal with the destitute, particularly in a wealthy community where the destitute person was once wealthy, and has fallen. It was tempting to judge her on a standard she never could meet: Why did she not pull herself up by her own bootstraps, many would wonder. The legal system in place to help someone in her situation made her chafe. She did not like the kind of help she received.
