Heels blast Wake on historic day at UNC

CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina's men's basketball players transformed from local celebrities to gawkers Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels had a game to play, but they couldn't help but notice the galaxy of stars that strolled into Section 117 of the Smith Center to watch them take on Wake Forest. "It was hard to keep my eyes off of [Michael] Jordan," sophomore guard Marcus Ginyard said. "When I was sitting on the bench, me and Mike Copeland were sitting down, and I'd see Mike look at him, and I'd turn and look. "Then we came into the locker room, and everybody was talking about how 'Jordan slapped me on the butt when I was coming into the locker room.' It was definitely something that just puts you in awe. It's crazy, if you think about it." The No. 5 Tar Heels responded well to the pressure of putting on a show for UNC's 1957 and 1982 NCAA championship teams, blowing out the Demon Deacons 104-67 during a special reunion weekend.

Moses Cone hopeful precautions against virus are working

The Moses Cone Health System is hopeful an outbreak of a highly contagious stomach virus at their hospitals may be slowing, while some area nursing homes are experiencing a spike in stomach illnesses. On Friday, the health system reported three new suspected cases of norovirus, or Norwalk virus, among patients already in its three hospitals. Four additional cases came in from the community."We're thinking these precautions and the public help with this is beginning to pay off," said Doug Allred, a spokesman for the health system. On Thursday, the hospital system made the unusual decision of asking the public to stay away from their facilities unless necessary.Tests confirmed an outbreak of norovirus in a unit of Moses Cone Hospital last week. Health system officials think patients in other hospital units at Moses Cone and Wesley Long Community Hospital were also infected with the virus.Hospital operations are continuing as normal.Units with outbreaks of the virus, which is difficult to contain, were banned from admitting new patients.Moses Cone officials think the virus has been moving through the community.

Living in a Virtual World Gets a Little Easier

It's a question that's beginning to permeate small and mid-sized business: Can virtual technologies solve real problems?

Based on comments from analysts and products from VMware, the bellwether company of the virtualization market, the answer appears to be a yes.

And that "yes" is a little more definitive based on an announcement by VMware. Today, the company introduced VirtualCenter for VMware Server, a new bundle designed to provide SMBs using the free VMware Server with what's designed to be an easy-to-use and cost-effective way to manage a virtual server infrastructure.

"There's a real problem of server sprawl [in small and mid-sized business] — two, three or four servers become 15, 20 or 30 servers," Ben Matheson, director of product management at VMware, said. He added that those servers are not well-utilized.

Nursing homes freeze at issue

ALBANY -- Voicing opposition to Albany County Executive Mike Breslin's freeze on admissions at the county's two nursing homes, county legislators are poised to pass a resolution Monday reversing the policy in order to allow new residents to be accepted.

Breslin's phaseout was in anticipation of changes in store for the county-operated facilities on Albany Shaker Road -- the Albany County Nursing Home and Ann Lee Home.
