50 is the New 40: Not the Start of Senior Life

My first reaction to the Sentinel article What's Fun About Being 50 is that people need an attitude adjustment when it comes to aging. Haven't they heard--"50 is the New 40."

I even wrote an article about it called, "If 50 is the New 40, Then 30 is the New 20" about the many ways our culture is growing younger--not just in body but in thought. People, for the most part, are acting younger and living longer these days. So the idea that 50 can be counted as a "senior" is ridiculous.

I mean, did anybody notice how young and sexy Stevie Nicks looked yesterday on one of the pre-Super Bowl shows? And she's 58. Or how about Diane Keaton, 61 on the cover of More magazine--targeting the over 40 audience? These are not just a couple of isolated celebrity occurrences. As I look around my neighborhood in Windermere, I see the same youthful attitude.

Dems should worry about wooing white men

Departing chair Bobby Kahn recognized the coming storm. In his farewell address to the Democratic Committee, Kahn won a standing ovation as he declared: In addition to the presidential election, there is a Senate race. And just this week, Saxby Chambliss was one of 28 senators all Republican to vote to eliminate the federal minimum wage. Yes, we remember what he did against Max Cleland in 2002. But lets look at what hes done in the Senate since then. If we do that, we can send Saxby, and the bad knee that kept him out of Vietnam, back home.
Insiders heard hidden meaning in Kahns remark a nuanced critical shot at Clelands 2002 campaign handlers for failing to protect an invulnerable triple-amputee Vietnam vet incumbent from a draft avoiders challenge.
P.S.: The Democratic Committee was slated to hear a harsh resolution condemning renegade Democrat Zell Miller for his attacks on the party that made him.

Are we saving too much for retirement?

We're not saving enough for retirement, we are told. The savings rate -- including the amount Americans sock away for retirement -- is the lowest in 74 years. We need to put more money away.

Then along come a few economists who are saying no, that's not right. We're being told to save too much.

Could the retirement crisis that the Baby Boomers are about to face be avoided?

For a lot of reasons, yes, I think that's possible.

Retirement planning involves creating very long-term estimates of what you will spend and what you can save. The numbers are crucial, but it's about other choices, too. Retirement planning is also about whether you want to leave money behind or spend it all. It's also about whether you emotionally need to have a cushion of extra money in reserve, or whether you can live without that.
