Livingston County must assist needy

There was an article in the Pontiac newspaper asking what it told the Livingston County Board when only one percent of the population showed up for the town meetings.I'd like to ask:When the original referendum was passed by such a large majority in favor of building a new nursing home, what did that tell the County Board? When there were literally thousands of names on the petitions in favor of a new home, what did that tell the County Board?Personally, I know some families who recently asked to get family members in other homes or assisted living. There was not room at the present time. These places are telling you what you want to hear, not what is happening in the real world.Food pantries are having considerably more people needing help. No one knows what might happen to them in the blink of an eye.The county home was constructed in the beginning to help the less fortunate.

Governor's Budget Holds Promise for Older New Yorkers

ALBANY, N.Y., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by Lois Aronstein, AARP New York State Director: Earlier this year, Governor Eliot Spitzer made an important promise to reform New York State's health care system. Today, in his budget, the Governor has shown that he is dedicated to implementing key steps to make that promise a reality by shifting spending away from expensive institutional care and toward community-based alternatives. Affordable and accessible health care, including prescription drugs, is a critical issue, especially for older New Yorkers. AARP commends the Governor for his proposals to: * Provide property tax cuts, particularly helping New Yorkers living on limited incomes. * More oversight of assisted living to ensure that older New Yorkers have quality independent living.

Ex-Robinson nursing home administrator convicted of manslaughter

An Allegheny County jury today convicted a former Robinson nursing home administrator of manslaughter in the October 2001 death of an elderly resident with Alzheimer's disease.

The jury convicted Martha Bell, the former head of the now-defunct Ronald Reagan Atrium I Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, as well as the home and its parent corporation, the Alzheimer's Disease Alliance of Western Pennsylvania. They were charged in connection with the death of Mabel Taylor, 88, who was found dead in a courtyard there after wandering unattended from her room.

The jury had deliberated since Wednesday afternoon.

Bell, 60, of West Mifflin, will remain free on bail until she is sentenced Monday by Common Pleas Judge David R. Cashman.

Health Minister disregards retirement age

Fijis interim Health Minister Dr Jona Senilagakali says he will disregard the mandatory retirement policy due to the shortage of staff in the health care system.

"The government says that doctors should retire at 55," he said.

"If they retire at 10 oclock and I will hire them again at 11 the same morning for them to continue to work on a contract and it will be the same for nurses."

Dr Senilagakali said the Health Ministry cannot afford to lose specialised health professional like doctors and nurses.

Fijis largest hospital, the Colonial War Memorial Hospital is facing a shortage of aestheticians and only emergency operations are being allowed.

Interim Public Service Minister Poseci Bune has proposed reducing the retirement age for civil servants from 60 to 55-years.

Seniors, Sinatra fill Ocean Center

Up from West Palm Beach, he was attending the free, two-day Senior Expo that began Wednesday, ready to discuss his invention with any of the hundreds of gray-haired potential customers streaming by.

"I'm the designer. It weighs just 49 pounds with the battery. It's the most compact and lightest in the world," boasted Huber, 63, a former hang gliding enthusiast, as an older couple moved closer to listen. "That's why I need the scooter. I have two bad legs."

Not far away, just past the senior cruise, manufactured housing and diabetic footwear booths, 93-year Gladys Hewitt of Daytona Beach stopped in front of the chronic pulmonary disease lung-capacity testing area with her daughter to comment about the Expo she attends annually.

The show gets her out of the house, even if she mostly window-shops.
